Designs start at just 1.5 cents per square inch for edge to edge (E2E) designs (Design Group A). Individual designs for each block, border and sashings are more expensive (Design Group C) as are E2E designs that are very dense (Design Group B) and require more stitches. Multiple colors of thread will add an additional cost for each change. Complete pricing list.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Batting - Choose your Batting</image:title>
<image:caption>The two most relevant factors in choosing a batting for a quilt are Loft and Fiber. This means how thick or thin your batting is. Low Loft = thin and High Loft = thick. Low Loft batting makes a thinner quilt which will drape around your bed and is considered “summer weight”. Low loft is good for lap quilts, throws, baby quilts, car quilts and picnic blankets. High Loft battings are best for a thicker, winter weight bed quilts and for people who like heavier weight quilts. Inexpensive batting, even those labeled high loft, will eventually crush down and lose their loft. Wool and good quality Polyester blends will maintain their loft over time. FIBER The three most common types of quilt batting are Polyester, 100% Cotton, and Cotton/Poly Blend and each has its own pros and cons. Wool, Bamboo and Silk have become more available in recent years. These other natural batting options have wonderful qualities, but are usually more expensive. Polyester – Pros: Less expensive, lightweight but very durable. The Low Loft options don’t need to be quilted as closely together. The Higher Loft versions are good for those who want their quilting to really stand out. Polyester batting options are often warmer – providing insulation without a lot of extra weight. Cons: Tends to shift when not densely quilted and ‘beard’, which means the polyester fibers migrate through the fabric to the outside of the quilt. This means that if your quilt is dark colors, tiny bits of white batting will beard to the surface. Cotton –Pros: Cotton feels like a thick flannel. It is a breathable natural fiber. It is the heaviest weight batting and the best option for machine quilting. It washes better without pilling. Generally, cotton softens over time and ages well. Cons: Most cotton requires quilting of 8-10 inches or less. Some cotton bating shrinks and creates a crinkled look. Cotton blend - (usually 80% cotton/20% polyester). Very similar to the cotton option, but is less-expensive and doesn’t shrink as much. Good for machine quilting. This is a very popular choice with our customers. What is Scrim – Cotton and Cotton/Poly blend battings sometimes come with a feature called Scrim. This is a thin layer of stabilizer on one or both sides of the batting to prevent the fibers from separating or stretching. Scrim is often needle-punched onto the batting making it stronger and more stable. The benefit of this is that you can place your quilting stitches further apart—as much as 8-12″ apart, versus a maximum of only 3-4″ for batting without a scrim. Batting with a scrim is great for machine quilting, but it is too dense for hand-quilting. Wool – 100% natural fiber, but it can shrink so if you buy it, make sure the label states if it’s been pre-shrunk. Wool resists folding and creasing and has great stitch-definition for showing off fancy machine quilting. It’s also beautiful for hand quilting. Wool batting is warmer and at the same time lighter-weight. Cons: higher price and the potential for allergic reaction for some people. Bamboo – eco-friendly, natural fiber. (Typically blended with Cotton which makes it great for breath-ability.) Bamboo is a soft, warm alternative to animal derived batting. Fusible Batting is made with a fusible resin on both sides of the batting. This is not recommended for our longarm machine. Choice Quilting stocks batting by the roll, usually with 20-30 yards on a roll. Buying batting by the roll allows us to offer better prices than packaged batting sold by Walmart or Joann. We stock batting manufactured by Hobbs, The Warm Company, Pellon, MDG Co and others. Quilters Dream is available by special order in all colors, sizes and fiber. You should always buy the best batting you can afford. The anticipated use of the quilt will help determine which batting to use. Special quilts gifted for weddings, etc. will look beautiful and last longer with wool. Children’s quilts that will be laundered often will do well with polyester or 80/20 poly/cotton blend.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Save - Choose Ways to $ave Money $$</image:title>
<image:caption>Computerized machine quilting is possible for folks on a tight budget and for charity quilts. Here are some ideas that may work for you. If your quilt has one or more borders, consider an edge to edge (e2e) pattern for the center or main portion of the quilt only. You can finish the borders at home on your domestic machine and save money. The backing and batting will be in place, just pin it and start sewing. Buy your batting and backing fabric from us and save 20%. We have 100% cotton backing fabric 108 inches wide starting at $11.99 per yard and 60 inch Prime Plus Broadcloth starting at $8.99 per yard. Purchase with batting and that makes the 108 inch fabric $9.59 per yard and the 60 inch broadcloth $7.20 per yard. Hobbs batting from $11.99 per yard bundled with backing fabric is $9.59 per yard with your discount. A Queen size quilt requires 2 ½ yards of batting so the total cost for Hobbs is $23.97 and backs low as $18. Light weight 80/20 cotton-poly batting (summer weight) is 96 inches wide and runs $9.99 per yard and with bundle discount you save $2 per yard or $19.98 for a queen size quilt. Want to avoid the $50 minimum for small quilts? There are several ways to do this. (1) Bring 2 small quilt tops that will use the same backing fabric and batting. (2) You and a friend each bring a small top that use the same backing and batting and both of you will avoid the minimum charge. (3) Bring your small quilt top and be willing to wait until another customer brings in a small one. Ask me to show you why this works when you come in. Bring a letter from a recognized 501.c.3 charity and I will quilt your charity quilt for free. This offer is limited to the first 2 quilts per month that come in the door ready to go with a design from group 1. See “Preparing your Quilt Top” for my definition of “ready to go.” Backing and batting from you or buy at 10% discount from us. The following “ideas” will NOT save you money and are not acceptable. Here are the don’ts: Don’t bring your own thread. Longarm machines are somewhat picky when it comes to thread and needles so keep your thread at home. The price of quality thread is included in the base price. Don’t ask me to piece your backing or batting. There is an extra charge for my time so do that at home. Don’t ask for a design by name that is not already in my book unless you are willing to pay for the design. Usually they run $15-$25 for e2e and $25 and up for block/corners/sashing designs. The designers set the prices for these designs and they must be purchased and downloaded into the machine computer. Don’t ask for “stitch in the ditch“ in lieu of an e2e design. That’s custom, tedious work and does not save money as it is billed by the hour. Ask about FREE quilt patterns!</image:caption>
